There’s always someone with an angle, but sometimes it can come around to bite them.

A federal grand jury is getting ready to hear evidence in the scheme to steal the Graceland estate from Elvis Presley’s family, according to sources. In May, the plot made national headlines, when a company called Naussany Investments used forged documents to imply that the late Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis’ only child, owed millions in unpaid loans. They wanted to use this to foreclose on the property and gain control, luckily a judge threw out the case.

Who knows what consequences might come, but for now the home is staying in the family.

OpenAI Faces New Lawsuit From Elon Musk

Elon Musk has just reopened his legal battle in his fight over artificial intelligence with OpenAI.

Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, started this fight in February, after accusing the ChatGPT maker of abandoning its original nonprofit mission by reserving some of its most advanced AI technology for private customers. The original suit was dropped in June with no explanation after OpenAI published old emails from Musk that revolved around OpenAI’s creation.

This new lawsuit was filed against OpenAI, Altman, and co-founder Gregory Brockman has made the same claims stating that Altman and Brockman “manipulated” Musk into co-founding OpenAI. A major difference, however, is that the new one was filed in federal court in Northern California instead of the California State court. The new suit is nearly double in length, and in contrast to the original filing it claims that OpenAI is engaging in racketeering activity.

In a statement, Musk’s lawyer Marc Toberoff said, “This lawsuit bursts Defendants hot-air philanthropy and holds them accountable for their misrepresentations to Musk and the public. It concerns far more that a $100 billion start-up, the future of AGI lies in the balance.”

Musk is not the only one scrutinizing OpenAi, however, as the FTC is investigating the AI company for possible consumer protection law violations. The Securities and Exchange Commission also probed whether OpenAI Investors were misled. There has also been public scrutiny as several high-profile safety leaders have left the company over the last few months while claiming the company had prioritized pushing new products out over safety.

Schumer Comes For Deep Fakes and AI

It’s not the first time he’s spoken about it.

For the past year, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has been sounding alarm bells about the need for lawmakers to regulate artificial intelligence. Recently, tech billionaire Elon Musk shared a parody deep fake video to his nearly 200 million followers that featured audio of Vice President Kamala Harris saying things she never has. Without guardrails for using AI to create content depicting political candidates, many fear it could lead to a Wild West situation where the technology is used to undermine voters’ trust in candidates like Harris and Trump.

“Look, deep fakes are a serious, serious threat to this democracy. If people can no longer believe that the person they’re hearing speak is actually the person, this democracy has suffered – it will suffer – in ways that we have never seen before. And if people just get turned off to democracy, Lord knows what will happen,” said Schumer in an interview.

With the window for legislative action closing very soon this calendar year, and control of the chamber up for grabs in the next election, Schumer is hoping to push must-pass bills to curtail the power of the fast-moving technology he has deemed a threat to democracy and national security.

Currently, he has hinted at attaching two deep fake election bills to the must-pass funding bill that is needed to avoid a government shutdown at the end of September, which would be roughly a month before election day. He also signaled that the defense policy bill for fiscal year 2025 would also include national security-related AI legislation.

AROUND THE ZOO

  • OpenAI co-founder John Schulman has just announced that he will be leaving the Microsoft-backed company to join its rival, Anthropic, an AI startup with funding from Amazon.

  • Actor Akili McDowell of “Billions” fame has been arrested and charged with murder in the case of Cesar Peralta who was shot and killed in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Houston on July 20th.

  • In response to environmental damage, the U.S. nonprofit Organic Consumers Association has filed lawsuits against unlisted West Pak Avocado Inc. and Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc. for labeling Mexican avocados as “sustainable” or “responsibly sourced.”

HEALTH

Weight Loss Drugs Might Cause Eating Disorders

In recent times there has been a rise of “weight-loss” drugs, namely Wegovy or Zepbound. They have been touted for their effects in dealing with weight loss and diabetes, however, a growing number of doctors are worried that the drugs are triggering or worsening eating disorders.

“They start using this drug and next thing you know, they’ve developed what looks very much like anorexia nervosa,” said psychologist Tom Hildebrandt, who leads Mount Sinai’s Center of Excellence in Eating and Weight Disorders in New York City.

These type of drugs are known as GLP-1 drugs, which also include the diabetes drugs Ozempic and Mounjaro. They work by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone that is released by the gut called glucagon-like peptide 1, which regulates blood sugar levels and curbs hunger.

While these drugs have been seen as miracles by some, it is found that sometimes a person’s brain may interpret such dramatic, sudden weight loss as starvation which can lead to people becoming more obsessive about food.

“The restrictive eating unintentionally spirals out of control until people can’t help themselves,” said Dr. Aaron Keshen, co-director of the Nova Scotia Eating Disorder Provincial Service in Canada.

Doctors are still not sure what percentage of people who are taking these new drugs are at risk of eating disorders, and that is due to the fact there are no published clinical trials addressing the question. However, misuse of over-the-counter and prescription medication was common in those with eating disorders long before GLP-1 drugs became available on the market.
