McKinsey & Company, a global consulting firm, has agreed to pay a whopping $650 million to resolve criminal and civil investigations into the advice shared with Purdue Pharma.

The company agreed to admit in a court filing for the settlement that they continued to work with the Pharmaceutical company to increase sales of OxyContin despite knowing the risks of the opioid. McKinsey was paid more than $93 million across 15 years while working with Purdue Pharma.

OxyContin, a painkiller, spurred an epidemic of opioid addiction, and more than 100,000 Americans have been dying annually from drug overdoses, 75% of which involved opioids.

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS

Dealing With Competition In Affiliate Marketing

Let’s face it: the affiliate marketing landscape is as competitive as it gets. But who says you can’t make allies out of your competition?

Affiliate marketing isn’t just a money-making venture; it’s a competitive battleground. With a global value of $17 billion, it’s clear why everyone wants a slice of this pie. But, how do you stand out in a sea of affiliate programs?

Knowledge is Power

First off, don’t let competition intimidate you. It’s part and parcel of business. What’s crucial is learning from it. Dive into competitor analysis. Study successful campaigns, dissect what works, and integrate these golden nuggets into your strategy. But don’t stop there. Scrutinize the underperformers too, ensuring you sidestep their pitfalls.

Customer Clarity

Affiliate marketing spans diverse industries, making understanding your audience crucial. Segment and dissect your customer base. Say you’re marketing tech gadgets to young males; don’t just stop there. Hone in on their location, earnings, and device preferences. Knowledge of your audience is your compass in the chaotic world of marketing.

Collaborate to Elevate

Remember, we’re more connected than ever in today’s digital world. This connectivity isn’t just for analysis; it’s for collaboration. Join forces with fellow marketers. By pooling resources and insights, you’re not just competing; you’re leading. Social media is your playground for these collaborations. These partnerships not only boost your campaigns but also make your brand more relatable and memorable.

Affiliate marketing is about embracing competition, not fearing it. Leverage it to fine-tune your strategies, deepen customer understanding, and foster collaborations. It’s a challenging journey, but with the right approach, the rewards are immense.

WEALTH, MARKETS & MONEY

Wholesale Prices Trending Up

According to the PPI, or the producer price index, a measure of wholesale prices rose more than was expected in November. This led to questions on whether the progress in slowing down inflation has slowed.

The PPI reported that wholesale prices increased 0.4% for the month, which was higher than the Dow Jones consensus estimate of 0.2%. Annually, PPI has risen 3%, the highest increase since February 2023.

Inflation continues to be a huge talking point, and these price rises make experts question if metrics are being met. However, many still expect the Federal Reserve to lower its key overnight borrowing rate next week. Futures Markets traders seem to think that a quarter percentage point reduction is incoming with near certainty. One reason for this is that many see the Fed as more concerned with the labor market than the immediate increase in prices that are gauged by the PPI. With unemployment looking to rise, the cut could be a measure to help counteract that.

The report comes after a recent release that the CPI, or Consumer Price Index, was up 2.7% in November over a 12-month basis and 0.3% month to month. The CPI is a more widely cited inflation gauge but seems to be trending in the same direction as the PPI.

“It appears that only an exogenous shock such as dramatic tariff policy shifts would be capable of derailing supply-side contributions toward inflation’s return to the Federal Reserve’s 2.0% average goal in the near term,” PNC senior economist Kurt Rankin wrote.

OpenAI Releases Controversial Sora Turbo

OpenAI has just released Sora Turbo, its new video generation tool, after facing some controversy over the development of the program.

The tool is designed to allow people to create high-quality videos for up to 20 seconds and allows people to create, blend, or remix text into new content.

“We’re introducing our video generation technology now to give society time to explore its possibilities and co-develop norms and safeguards that ensure it’s used responsibly as the field advances,” OpenAI said in an announcement. “We hope this early version of Sora will enable people everywhere to explore new forms of creativity, tell their stories and push the boundaries of what’s possible with video storytelling.”

The tool, however, had been embroiled in controversy in the past month after creatives who had helped research and develop the app for free opposed the app in a letter to OpenAI, which also included a leaked code for Sora.

“Artists are not your unpaid R&D,” they said. “We are not your free bug-testers, PR puppets, training data, validation tokens. We are being lured into art-washing to tell the world that Sora is a useful tool for artists.”

Others have stated that the tool could make it easier to create fake content meant to damage others, as well as issues surrounding how it could be affected by copyright law. Many of the same concerns over the growth of AI have been echoed by critics. OpenAI has stated that they will be blocking content that is illegal or highly controversial, such as child sexual abuse materials and sexual deepfakes
