GM Cuts Down On Employees

General Motors is now the latest company to have another round of layoffs.

1,000 salaried employees globally will be cut in its software and services division following a review to streamline the unit’s operations.

“As we build GM’s future, we must simplify for speed and excellence, make bold choices, and prioritize the investments that will have the greatest impact. As a result, we’re reducing certain teams within the Software and Services organization. We are grateful to those who helped establish a strong foundation that positions GM to lead moving forward,” said a GM spokesperson.

The layoffs constitute about 1.3% of the company’s global salaried workforce of 76,000, which includes 53,000 U.S. salaried employees. The cuts have come as the automaker begins attempts to reduce costs and employee headcount as they fear a downturn in the industry.

The units affected have been a big part in GM’s plan to strengthen in emerging markets such as all-electric vehicles and so-called software-defined vehicles, both of which have become major industry trends.

Monetizing software in particular has been a major focus for automakers, as the industry eyes recurring revenue opportunities such as subscriptions to boost profits. GM’s software and services division covers a wide variety of areas including things like their OnStar brand and infotainment. They also have a big role in the development of new areas such as subscriptions and other vehicle features.

Gemini Makes Your Work Day Easier

AMD is making moves in that market, announcing they are planning to acquire server maker ZT Systems for $4.9 billion as the company looks to expand its portfolio of artificial intelligence chips and hardware to battle Nvidia.

AMD plans to pay for 75% of the acquisition using cash and then to cover the remainder in stock. The company had $5.34 billion in cash and short-term investments as of the second quarter.

A motivating factor for this move is the requirements that AI has put on chipmakers. It dictates that they need to string together thousands of chips in clusters to achieve the necessary amount of data-crunching power. This requires a whole makeup of server systems to become extremely important.

“AI systems are our number one strategic priority,” said AMD CEO Lisa Su.

ZT Systems currently holds about 2,500 employees, of which AMD plans to retain about 1,000 engineers. ZT Systems has generally generated revenue of roughly $10 billion according to Su.

This acquisition will allow AMD to test and roll out its latest AI graphics processing units more quickly than before and will bring them to the level that cloud computing giants like Microsoft require.

This also means that AMD will separate its server manufacturing business and sell it off as soon as the deal closes, however, they have not spoken with any potential buyers yet.

Executives expect the deal to close in the first half of 2025, and an additional 12 to 18 months to finalize the sale of their manufacturing business.

We’ve all been there. Staring at an email not sure if you’re saying exactly what you want the other person to hear.

Well, now Google’s Gemini will be able to help you communicate. Along with Gemini-powered “Help me write” tools like Formalize and Elaborate, you can now select “Polish” to help refine the emails you’re writing. The company has now also added shortcuts for Android and iOS to make it more clear these options are available.

These tools are available to those with Google One AI Premium accounts, or if you’ve paid for the Gemini add-on for Workspace. Now just select your text and you’ll be given the choice to Polish, Formalize, Elaborate, Shorten, or even have Gemini write an entirely new draft for you.

This is just the latest in several moves that Google has made to incorporate AI into all of its products, and one that many have suspected will be a major use for AI in the future. Streamlining and improving communications for businesses and employees to help them move on to more important tasks rather than sweating over one email for multiple minutes.

AI tools for the past few years have been on the rise, with implementations like these being continually rolled out by big companies. Hailed as time savers, many tools focus on cutting out work that is time-consuming, but not necessarily hard to accomplish.

AROUND THE ZOO

  • 7/11 might get bought out! The Japanese-owned convenience store has just received a bid from the owner of Circle K, Canada’s Alimentation Couche-Tard, to acquire all of its outstanding shares.

  • After looking at the information from new retail and jobs data, major global investment banking, securities, asset, and wealth management firm Goldman Sachs has cut the percentage chance of a U.S. recession to 20%.

  • Now is the time to get ready. Many are expecting the Fed to do its first rate cut in years in September, with it expected to be a cut of three quarter-points.

Protein Helps Keep The Weight Off

According to a study, researchers found that a higher-protein diet helped promote weight management by reducing levels of a particular gut bacteria linked to intestinal fat absorption. They also noted that reducing levels of specific gut bacteria via higher protein intake could promote sustained weight loss after dietary restriction.b Researchers analyzed higher-protein diets on energy expenditure, which was noted to be higher than subjects who were not on the diet. From further tests, they found that it decreased intestinal fat absorption as well.

Dr. Tonia Vinton, an assistant professor of Internal Medicine said, “This study suggests that after a short period of dietary restriction – such as intermittent fasting or very low-calorie dieting attempts – a high protein diet may prevent weight [regain] by increasing Lactobacillus gut bacteria, which [limits] intestinal lipid absorption.”

In addition to these benefits, a high-protein diet has already been shown to preserve lean body mass during the active phase of weight loss, which promotes overall health and quality of life. Diet isn’t everything, however, so here are a few more easy tips in conjunction with it to help keep that weight off:

  • Eating less processed foods

  • Eating more fruits and vegetables

  • Walking at least 8,000 steps per day

  • Knowing your calorie needs, and tracking calories using a food app

  • Cooking at home instead of eating at restaurants.

These could be some crucial tips for after that large Labor Day cookout coming up, an absolute killer on many people’s dieting plans.
