The Telecom company has agreed to a $1M fine over the incident. However, that is not the end, as the culprit, which appears to be Steve Kramer a long-time political consultant, may face a $6M fine alongside 26 criminal counts of voter intimidation and impersonating officials in New Hampshire.

Non-Compete Ban Blocked By Judge

It may be blocked, but perhaps not forever.

A federal court in Texas has thrown out the FTC’s ban on non-compete agreements that were set to take effect September 4.

Judge Ada Brown of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas made the ruling and stated that the federal agency had overstepped by approving the ban.

“The FTC lacks substantive rulemaking authority concerning unfair methods of competition. The role of an administrative agency is to do as told by Congress, not to do what the agency think[s] it should do,” she wrote.

The particular lawsuit that was filed for this case was from Ryan LLC, a tax services firm in Dallas, which sued to block the rule just hours after the FTC had narrowly voted to implement it back in April. The lawsuit was also joined by several organizations representing a broad swath of American Businesses such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Business Roundtable, and the Texas Association of Business.

Data says that an estimated 30 million people, or one in five American workers, are bound by a non-compete. The new rule had the potential to lead to wage increases totaling nearly $300 billion per year and the creation of 8,500 new businesses per year once workers could freely pursue new opportunities without being taken to court.

The FTC has stated its disappointment in the decision but plans to continue fighting to stop non-compete practices.

“We are seriously considering a potential appeal, and today’s decision does not prevent the FTC from addressing non-competes through case-by-case enforcement actions,” wrote FTC spokesperson Victoria Graham.

Gemini Makes Your Work Day Easier

AMD is making moves in that market, announcing they are planning to acquire server maker ZT Systems for $4.9 billion as the company looks to expand its portfolio of artificial intelligence chips and hardware to battle Nvidia.

AMD plans to pay for 75% of the acquisition using cash and then to cover the remainder in stock. The company had $5.34 billion in cash and short-term investments as of the second quarter.

A motivating factor for this move is the requirements that AI has put on chipmakers. It dictates that they need to string together thousands of chips in clusters to achieve the necessary amount of data-crunching power. This requires a whole makeup of server systems to become extremely important.

“AI systems are our number one strategic priority,” said AMD CEO Lisa Su.

ZT Systems currently holds about 2,500 employees, of which AMD plans to retain about 1,000 engineers. ZT Systems has generally generated revenue of roughly $10 billion according to Su.

This acquisition will allow AMD to test and roll out its latest AI graphics processing units more quickly than before and will bring them to the level that cloud computing giants like Microsoft require.

This also means that AMD will separate its server manufacturing business and sell it off as soon as the deal closes, however, they have not spoken with any potential buyers yet.

Executives expect the deal to close in the first half of 2025, and an additional 12 to 18 months to finalize the sale of their manufacturing business.
