Don’t want AI to train on what you post on X? Well, you don’t have a choice now.
X’s newest terms of service, which will go into effect on November 15th, will allow AI to train on user data.
“By submitting, posting or displaying Content on or through the Services, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to make your Content available to the rest of the world,” it states in the new ToS, which also includes the right to analyze any of that content “including, for example, for use with and training of our machine learning and artificial intelligence models, whether generative or another type.”
Using content to train AI has been a huge sore spot as the technology continues to grow. Many people, especially artists, on X have been worried about their work being used or adapted. Others seem to be concerned that AI will use personal data in their tweets to train.
Grok, which is X’s AI chatbot, has already been hit with controversy, from spreading false information about the 2024 election to generating violent, graphic fake images of famous politicians. Previously, users could opt out of allowing AI to train on their content. It is unclear if that option will remain available after the changes go into effect.
Those who take issue with the changes could find themselves in a courtroom that is favored by conservative activists. Within the terms, it states that any disputes will be brought to the US District Court for the Northern District of Texas or state courts in Tarrant County, Texas.
