Looks like Google has just taken a sizable blow.

A federal U.S. judge ruled that Google has illegally held a monopoly in two market areas: search and text advertising. This is the first anti-monopoly decision against a tech company in decades.

“Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” said Judge Amit Mehta of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Recession Fears Spark Market Sell-Off

Over the past weekend, U.S. stocks saw heavy declines during trading, which has now sparked fears of a recession in the markets.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down roughly 900 points while the S&P 500 declined 2.3% and the Nasdaq fell 2.5%. Many think that the Federal Reserve should have already cut rates to prevent this, and now the rates are going to pull the U.S. into a recession.

In the past several years since COVID-19, the Fed has kept the rates at a place comparable to before the Great Recession hoping to fight against inflation. However, some financial and economic data suggest the U.S. economy is rapidly weakening in response to this.

While there are macroeconomic factors that are hurting the markets, some commentators point out that the market sell-off could be traders abandoning a strategy that was adopted to counter the Fed’s high interest rates. When the U.S. central bank made borrowing more expensive, the Bank of Japan had done the opposite until recently. Wall Street started borrowing against the yen at lower interest rates in able to invest more cheaply. However, now that trade has flipped as Japan faces its own economic downturn, causing traders to abandon this strategy.

Investors have now instead started putting money into U.S. Treasury bonds which they see as “haven” assets during volatile financial moments.

It’s not just normal trading that has seen a hit. Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum have also seen sizable declines with Bitcoin falling nearly 14% and Ethereum dropping 17%

Things Get Worse For TikTok

The U.S. government has launched another legal strike against TikTok, claiming that the app has failed to stop children from joining and has unlawfully collected their personal data.

The lawsuit accuses the app and its parent company, ByteDance, of violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by allowing children to create accounts without their parent’s knowledge or consent while simultaneously collecting and retaining their data.

The lawsuit seemingly stems from a 2019 agreement between the FTC and TikTok that settled allegations that it illegally collected personal information from children under the age of 13 in which the app was required to take specific measures to comply with COPPA. The Justice Department seems to think that TikTok has continued to violate the law as well as the agreement with the FTC.

According to the complaint, despite the fact the app offers a “Kids Mode” for users under the age of 13, TikTok has still “knowingly allowed children under 13 to create accounts in the regular TikTok experience and collected extensive personal information from those children without first providing parental notice or obtaining verifiable parental consent.”

A TikTok spokesperson responded to the allegations stating, “We disagree with these allegations, many of which relate to past events and practices that are factually inaccurate or have been addressed,” TikTok spokesperson Michael Hughes said in a statement. “We are proud of our efforts to protect children, and we will continue to update and improve the platform. To that end, we offer age-appropriate experiences with stringent safeguards, proactively remove suspected underage users, and have voluntarily launched features such as default screentime limits, Family Pairing, and additional privacy protections for minors.”
