Right now, Amazon workers have until January before they’re expected to be back in corporate offices five days a week.

However, it seems like many aren’t expecting to stick around that long. A recent survey of 2,585 Amazon employees had 73% of them saying they are heavily considering looking for a new job in the face of the new “return-to-office” policy. Many others have also spoken about how the decision has been a blow to morale with the policy being an even bigger blow to parents and caregivers who rely on remote and hybrid flexibility.

Remote work has been a hot topic since the pandemic, with remote work becoming even more desirable to the general work force. Some experts even see the RTO policy as a way to get people to quit and avoid the cost of laying them off.

Another Strike Is On The Horizon

Longshore workers from Maine to Texas could walk off their jobs on Tuesday which could cause the most disruptive strike in recent U.S. history.

With the strike, you can expect a wide variety of goods to stop flowing over the docks on most of the docks in the East and Gulf coasts. Anything could be affected, from bananas to luxury imports or even things like toys and clothing.

One side of the negotiations is the United States Maritime Alliance, also known as USMX, representing the major shipping lines, terminal operators, and port authorities. All of these are foreign-owned, and they’re up against the International Longshoremen’s Association which represents a total of 85,000 members.

The union says that 50,000 members are covered by the contract, but USMX estimates it to be closer to 25,000. However, should those members walk out, which is very likely to happen, the strike could shut down three dozen locations along the East and Gulf coasts.

A major disruption could be in the import of bananas as Port Wilmington, Delaware could shut down. It processes 1.2 million metric tons of the popular fruit which represents over a fifth of the nation’s bananas. The port of New York and New Jersey would also shut down, which is the nation’s third-largest port by volume of cargo handled.

The Port of Baltimore is likely to be affected, which handles the nation’s largest amount of auto imports. On the flip side, the Port of Charleston could also shut down which handles outgoing shipments of SUVs made at the BMW factory in South Carolina, which exports more vehicles overseas than any other factory in the U.S.

These are just a few among the many. According to Benjamin Richards, a senior marine scientist from NOAA, a 2022 survey found there were more than 260 projects underway using AI at the administration.
